It is with great pleasure that the Spanish Association of Andrology (ASESA) informs you that Barcelona was selected by the General Assembly 2005 of the International Society of Andrology (ISA) as the venue for the 9th International Congress of Andrology, that will take place in 2009.

Barcelona is well known in the andrological world with a long history of contributions to this discipline. As early as in 1970, the Puigvert Foundation, a leading institution in andrology in Barcelona, Spain, organized the 1st International Course on Male Infertility. Personal interactions between some of the participants of this course led to the idea of an international committee of experts, with the objective of gaining insight and stimulating the development of the discipline andrology in as many countries as possible. Following this lead, male infertility also was the main subject of the 2nd Latin American Congress of Urology in 1973. In 1976 the 1st International Congress of Andrology was held in Barcelona, gathering 300 scientists and clinicians world-wide. An International Committee of Andrology (CIDA, Comité Internacional de Andrología) was created during this event, the embryo from which the International Society of Andrology would originate in 1981. We can affirm that our city has the honour and the privilege to be a lead player in andrology.

Barcelona is located on the shores of the Mediterranean, enjoys an excellent climate and has a perfect infrastructure of both communications and hotels. This combination has allowed our city to host many important successful events of international scope, reaching a high standard quality of its services. In addition, our city is an important starting site for the many cruises that sail the Mediterranean Sea.

In the socio-cultural area, Barcelona, a bi-millenary city, is proud to be the capital of Catalonia and the place where many internationally recognized artists, such as Picasso, Dalí, and Miró, have worked. The Catalan architecture is world famous, emphasized by Gaudí, who provided our city with numerous samples of his talent, such as the temple of the Sagrada Familia. Catalonia has also been the land of famous talented composers such as Pau Casals. As a result of this rich cultural background a very visible track of activities and objects of interest is present in our city, as can be experienced when walking along the streets, particularly in the Gothic Quarter, the old part of the city, or when visiting its numerous museums.

Finally, Barcelona’s gastronomy is traditionally considered to be among the best in Spain due to the quality of its products and their excellent preparation. This, together with the healthy Mediterranean character, makes Barcelona an outstanding place for the lovers of fine cuisine.

Most importantly, a very interesting, cutting edge scientific program is being prepared by the ISA Program Organizing Committee. Together with an attractive social program, we will have the best ingredients to make sure that the 9th International Congress of Andrology, 2009 in Barcelona, will be unforgettable for all.

For all these reasons we hope to see you in Barcelona, also to renew the warm friendship that the Catalan people showed in the 1992 Olympic Games with their invitation to the world: friends for ever.
